Pinyin and Characters

Pinyin use the tone marks to indicate the corresponding characters. More than one character can be in the same form of Pinyin, with the same tone marks.

  • 两 liǎng - two, some, a few
  • 两 is used when counting things with a measure word, 二 is used in numbers. (Quote: 两 - Wikitionary)

  • For numbers eleven to nineteen, you would add a ten (十 shí) before the single digit numbers.【For example:】十一 shí yī (eleven), 十二 shí èr (twelve), 十三 shí sān (thirteen), etc.
  • For numbers such as twenty and thirty, you would add the ten (十 shí) after the single digit numbers.【For example:】 二十 èr shí (twenty), 三十 sān shí (thirty), 四十 sì shí (forty), etc.
  • Similarly, for hundred (百 bǎi), thousand (千 qiān), ten thousand (万 wàn), and hundred million (亿 yì) you would also add them after the single digit numbers.【For example:】九百 bǎi (nine hundred), 九千 jiǔ qiān (nine thousand), 九万 jiǔ wàn (ninety thousand), 九亿 jiǔ yì (nine hundred million).
  • 【Important/Exceptional】Other then twenty (二十 èr shí), for numbers that start with two, 两 liǎng (two) is used instead of 二 èr (two).【For example:】两百二十 liǎng bǎi èr shí (220, two hundred and twenty) not 二百二十 èr bǎi èr shí.
